St. John the Baptist, Donatello, Provenience and brief history
*************************************************************************
At about 1450, this masterpiece in Carrara marble had been purchased in Florence by the earl Frankopan. (Family Frankopan had feudal possessions in Croatia, Hungary, France and Italy)

Donatello created this fine marble sculpture of St. John the Baptist in Florence and afterwards the extremely similar second statue in bronze, which has since then been colocated in the Siena Cathedral. Both masterpieces have the same dimensions, with the only difference between the marble statue and later created bronze sculpture is the slightly altered facial expression with the lips.

Later in the 17th century when Katarina Frankopan (daughter of the Earl of Krk, Krsto Frankopan and Princess Julia de Naro, from the roman principal family Barberini de Naro), was married 1641 to Count Petar Zrinski. The marble sculpture of the St. John Baptist was given as the wedding present to Count Zrinski.

In 1671, after the (presumed) conspiracy against the Austrian Emperor, Petar Zrinski and Krsto Frankopan were executed and the masterpiece was taken over by the appointed supervisor of the Zrinski estate, Thomas Kukuljevic.

The sculpture is in the private ownership in Central Europe, and available for purchase as described in this specific procedure.
